After only one day of being launched, Elon Musk threatened to sue Meta, the parent company of Threads, for releasing a “copycat” app.

Threads gained 100 million sign-ups in its initial five days. In addition, the first two days of Threads resulted in a 5% drop in web traffic for and an 11% drop overall.

For these two feats alone, it is already being termed the “Twitter killer”. 

Threads offers a visually engaging, modern design with multimedia content sharing, enhancing the user experience and interactivity. It focuses on “kindness” and streamlined conversations within closed groups. We will all have to wait and see whether it sticks to this “righteous” path for long and lives up to this initial adulation.

Forrester’s research director Mike Proulx praised Threads’ launch as a “case study” for addressing Twitter’s devolving nature and demonstrating demand for an alternative.

Zuckerberg stated that the company would only consider monetization once there was a clear path to 1 billion users. At the moment, the Threads app is free to use.

  • According to Website Planet, 87% of the brands that they looked at received more likes on Threads than they did on Twitter. On average, these brands saw 8 times more likes on the new platform.
  • With 100 million users in less than a week, Threads became the fastest-growing app ever. It took the website two months to break the previous record, which was held by ChatGPT, a wildly popular generative AI tool.
  • Twitter only collects 7 data parameters, whereas Threads collects 14, including sensitive data, identifiers, financial, search history, purchases, and health-related data.
